Protecting You in a Changing Threat Environment
Cyber threats continue to increase in frequency and sophistication across the financial services industry. Criminals often target customers directly through deception rather than attempting to break bank systems. Staying informed is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk.

Common Cyber Threats Customers Should Know
Know the playbook so you can spot the trick.
Phishing & Smishing
Fraudulent emails or texts that mimic banks, vendors, or coworkers to steal credentials.
What to watch for
- Unexpected messages requesting personal or account information
- Urgent language such as “act now” or “account suspended”
- Links that redirect to look-alike websites
GCB TIP
Hover over links before clicking. GCB will never ask for your password or full SSN by email or text.
Business Email Compromise
Fraudulent emails or texts that mimic banks, vendors, or coworkers to steal credentials.
What to watch for
- Requests to change payment instructions without verbal confirmation
- Emails that closely resemble known vendors with small spelling changes
- Pressure to bypass normal approval processes
GCB TIP
Verify wire instruction changes by phone using a known number — never the one in the email.
Vishing & Tech Support Scams
Fraudulent emails or texts that mimic banks, vendors, or coworkers to steal credentials.
What to watch for
- Unsolicited calls claiming your account or computer is compromised
- Requests to install remote-access software
- Demands for payment via gift cards, crypto, or wire transfer
GCB TIP
Hang up and call back using the number on your card or our website.
Romance & Investment Scams
What to watch for
- Online relationships that quickly turn to financial requests
- “Guaranteed” returns from unfamiliar trading platforms
- Pressure to keep the relationship or investment private
GCB TIP
If you’ve never met someone in person, never send them money — no exceptions.
Elder Financial Exploitation
Scams targeting older adults via grandparent calls, fake charities, or imposter government agents.
What to watch for
- Callers claiming a loved one is in trouble and needs immediate funds
- Unfamiliar charities pressuring large or urgent donations
- Requests for secrecy from family or trusted advisors
GCB TIP
Talk to a banker before sending any unusual transfer. We’re trained to spot exploitation.
Public Wi-Fi & Device Risks
Scams targeting older adults via grandparent calls, fake charities, or imposter government agents.
What to watch for
- Banking or shopping on public or unknown Wi-Fi networks
- Devices with outdated operating systems or browsers
- Apps installed from outside official app stores
GCB TIP
Talk to a banker before sending any unusual transfer. We’re trained to spot exploitation.
Six Habits That Stop Most Attacks
Master these and you’ll be safer than 95% of internet users.
Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, iCloud Keychain). Every site should have a different password — at least 14 characters, mixing words, numbers, and symbols.
Turn on MFA for email, banking, social media, and any account tied to money. Prefer app-based codes (Authy, Google Authenticator) or hardware keys over SMS when offered.
Use a screen lock, enable device encryption, install reputable antivirus, and avoid public USB charging stations (use your own cable + wall plug).
Set up GCB transaction alerts, review statements monthly, and pull your free credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com.
Important: Gulf Capital Bank will NEVER ask you to provide, verify, or update personal account information via phone, email, text message, or an unsecured website.
